Gas oven won't cook evenly. Any advice?

I've been using my same cookie recipe for years now and have gotten consistent results in an electric oven. However, I recently moved into my own apartment with a crappy gas oven (something I didn't discover until now) that seems to do more burning than cooking. So when I baked them the usual way, I didn't get the golden brown and chewy cookies I get every time. Instead, the top was raw and the bottom was black. It was like I cooked them in a frying pan instead! This isn't the first time this has happened when using my oven. I could bake in glass dishes for casseroles, stone for braises, you name it. And every time it would be black on the bottom, okay-ish on top. And sure, putting it on the top rack helps a little, but when I want to bake something bigger (like a bundt cake), I have to lower it closer to the heat source and pretty much babysit the darn thing for an hour. It's incredibly frustrating when the heat source is only on the bottom and there's little idea of what to do. At this point I feel like I'm wasting food instead of cooking it, and I really miss baking.I had my apartment's handyman take a look at the oven and he said there wasn't really anything to fix. I also can't afford to buy a brand new one right now (I'm already struggling to pay everything on my entry level salary). Is there some way to at least control these extreme hot spots to avoid burning? via /r/AskCulinary https://ift.tt/2v6fdZ8
