About Berserk

I wanted to share my thoughts on how Berserk is developing in the latest Arc. When I started reading Berserk, I absolutely loved it. It became my favorite manga. Not only was the story engaging and full of emotion, it was for the most part consistent within its universe. The Golden Arc has an absolutely mind shattering finale which sets the story on some great rails for an amazing plot.Through it all, you get to know Guts' origins. How he held a sword ever since he was a small child, and how his home was a battlefield. It is only natural for him to have developed amazing strength and skill with a sword. In the Golden Arc, he became the first human to be able to wound Zodd in the past 300 years, as stated by Zodd himself. You can see this a sort of feat of strength. It sets him apart from all the other warriors Zodd had ever encountered (and Zodd's purpose in life was to search for strong opponents), so you can tell Guts is truly something special. You can sort of expect this, its only natural given how he lived his life, at some point even stated by Guts himself he lived by the sword, with no greater contemplations in life.I believe this is the reason why after the eclipse, when he receives the brand of sacrifice which was thought to mean certain death for any human, its easy to believe that he'll be able to fight the demons after him, even if it means a life of torment. After he receives Dragon Slayer from good ol' Godot, a weapon to match his strength, you've completed the recipe for a truly legendary hero (or antihero, idk, Guts is only human), and so he embarks on his 2 year war against demonkind. This is why I dislike Guts travelling party in the Falcon of the Millenium Empire Arc. I want to state first that I don't dislike the characters per se, as new characters expand the universe and maintain an engaging storyline. I do believe however they break the balance Miura built over the past 3 arcs. Simply put: in this universe humans are weak. They have virtually no chance of victory against any single apostle. Entire armies have no hope against even a few monsters corrupted by demonic influence. This is no problem for Guts, as he hones his swordsmanship to the point where he can even match Nosferatu Zodd on the Hill of Swords... but then comes Serpico, a noble's bodyguard who after receiving some fencing classes and dueling a few nobles, is almost able to match Guts' legendary swordsmanship. I mean... what? How? Why? If a character is going to be so strong, he should have a backstory to back it up: Silat comes to mind, perhaps he should've been Guts' companion. I believe Miura thought it would be better if Guts wasn't the only capable melee fighter in the group, but I'd rather have that be the case than a common-sense breaking character. Then we have Isidro, a kid who was absolutely helpess when first encountered, is then able to dispatch multiple trolls no problem after receiving a magic dagger and a few lessons from Guts. He was fine as just a thief, but he's even able to spar with legendary Knight Azan, who has decades of experience. This left me a bad mouth taste. Then we have magic within the same universe: it takes kids years to develop any sort of meaningful magic, and they have to start young, even going as far as residing on places where time moves slower. Well, Farnese ain't having none of that, because she has to be useful somehow now that Casca's back, so we'll have her learn pretty darn fast from a very young mage apprentice turned teacher, defying all expectations.Ok. Well, this is almost* DragonBallSuper-powerscaling-breaking shit right there. Ok, I'm done ranting. Am I alone in these thoughts? via /r/Berserk https://ift.tt/2FrFu9o
